Today’s funding will make several significant upgrades to New Circle Road, the highest fatal and serious injury corridor identified in Lexington’s safety action plan. This three-part project will overhaul the infrastructure of this heavily trafficked artery and implement several changes to improve motorist and pedestrian safety and reduce traffic fatalities. This federal funding is made possible through DOT’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Funding Opportunity, established in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Senator McConnell led the IIJA to Senate passage two years ago, and the President signed the bill into law. The IIJA gives Kentucky billions of federal dollars over five years to improve the Commonwealth’s roads, bridges, railroads, riverports, airports, broadband, and more. Senator McConnell, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, contacted the Secretary of Transportation in support of Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s competitive federal application. “Traffic fatalities continue to take a tragic toll on communities across the Commonwealth, especially on New Circle Road in Lexington. Fortunately, we are taking important strides to reduce this deadly trend, and I’m grateful to see today’s significant investment help deploy commonsense safety improvements in the community,” said Senator McConnell. “I supported the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act because of programs like this, which will help improve traffic safety in one of our Commonwealth’s largest cities.” | 1 | 2026-03-30T01:40:41Z | 2026-04-06T18:56:20Z |
