Senator McConnell is only the second Kentuckian to lead his party in the U.S. Senate. The other Senator from Kentucky to serve as party leader was Alben Barkley. U.S. Senate Majority Leader McConnell said, “It’s an honor to once again have been chosen by my colleagues to continue serving as their leader. I know I speak for each of my Republican colleagues in expressing my gratitude to the American people for entrusting us with this majority. We are eager to work with House Republicans and President-elect Trump to bring the national and economic security our nation is asking for.” On Wednesday, the Senate GOP leadership team for the next Congress hosted a media stakeout in the U.S. Capitol. Also this week, in his office in the U.S. Capitol, Senator Mitch McConnell congratulated and welcomed the newest GOP member of the Senate, Senator-elect Todd Young of Indiana. On Friday, Kentucky Today published an editorial regarding Senator McConnell's leadership: "Mitch McConnell never loses focus of the fact that Kentuckians sent him to Washington to do a job. He’s proven himself to be a real workhorse in the U.S. Senate. And his re-election this week as Senate majority leader only strengthens his ability to get things done. Over the past three decades, McConnell has accomplished much, including helping to build and enhance the infrastructure needed for the state to prosper. He’s had a hand in every major transportation project in the state since first elected in 1984, whether roads and bridges or river locks and airports." McConnell Comments on Surgeon General’s Report on Opioid Epidemic in America Senators McConnell, Markey Requested The Report In Bipartisan Effort On Thursday, Senator McConnell commented regarding the release of the Surgeon General’s Report: “Facing Addiction in America.” Last year, Senators McConnell and Edward Markey (D-Mass.) called on the Department of Health and Human Services to issue the report. The following excerpt is from a WFIE-TV newscast in Owensboro, Ky.: "A new government report calls attention to a national public health crisis - drug and alcohol addiction...Now this is the first time a Surgeon General's report has focused on drug and alcohol addiction. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was one of the people who called for this report last year...he was pleased to see the report highlight community-based prevention, saying, 'Kentucky has seen a rise of opioid additctions and deaths recently' and he calls coordinated efforts important and effective. Senator McConnell also praised the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act passed earlier this year. He says he will use his position to work across the aisle to fix this problem." McConnell: Election Brought Hope, Renewal, Repudiation of Obama’s Liberal Reign On Tuesday, the Lexington Herald-Leader published Senator McConnell's latest column: "It’s well known in Washington that President Obama failed to extend outreach in any significant way to most members of Congress, even many in his own party. As the Obama years conclude, it’s clear that was one of his biggest failings. "Soon we will have a new president. I look forward to Congress working with President-elect Donald Trump to finally achieve significant reforms, including the repeal of Obamacare, tax relief to stimulate economic growth and jobs, and the rollback of a War on Coal that has left many Kentuckians out of work. And President Trump will appoint to the Supreme Court a justice who, like the late Antonin Scalia, recognizes that the judiciary’s role is to interpret the Constitution, not legislate from the bench. "The election of Donald Trump sends a clear message to the establishment in Washington: it’s no longer business as usual.
