Salant U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez took to the Senate floor on Wednesday to urge his colleagues not to begin their holiday recess without renewing legislation that provides medical coverage and compensation to first responders injured in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act is named for a North Arlington resident and New York City police officer who died of a respiratory disease attributed to him breathing in dust at the World Trade Center site after 9/11. It provides treatment and economic compensation for police officers, firefighters and other first responders who contracted health problems, including respiratory diseases and cancer, after working at 9/11 sites. The original bill expired Sept. 30, but there is still money available.
