The Senate is expected to take final votes Tuesday on the conference report accompanying a Senate bill (S 1177) to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (PL 107-110). House and Senate conferees negotiated the measure using the Senate bill and another version from the House (HR 5)... ...Democrats widely agree that No Child Left Behind sought unattainable standards and employed overly prescriptive remedies when states, districts and schools fell short. However, they also pushed for some federal oversight, concerned that states would otherwise revert to the pre-No Child Left Behind that saw major inequities among schools and student subgroups, particularly poor, minority children.
