Cory Booker and Bob Menendez pledged their support of the bill, saying it represents progress in education and returns control to local and state lawmakers. The new legislation would replace the highly controversial No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which critics say gives the federal government too much authority over how student achievement is measured. The Every Student Succeeds Act has many components, among them is putting an end to federal test-based accountability systems and allowing states and school districts to decide how to weigh those tests. The bill will also provide grants to help low performing school districts identified by the states. Ultimately I view this bill as being about balance. balancing the need to return control to our schools, to those who are in the best position to improve them," Menendez said on a press conference call Monday.
