U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-N.J.) today announced $5,322,245 in federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist in elevating 28 homes in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) in Cape May County. Superstorm Sandy continues to serve as a stark reminder of the value in making smart, upfront investments in resiliency, which yield long-term savings by reducing the damage caused by future storms, said Sen. Menendez. Raising the elevation of these 28 structures will ensure that buildings are adequately prepared for storms in the future, creating a long-term safeguard for families and small businesses that are threatened by floods. I will continue to fight for as much funding as possible to help invest in stronger, more resilient shore communities that keep New Jerseyans out of harms way. Although five years have passed since HurricaneSandys destruction, we must remain focused on protecting New Jersey families from the devastation of natural disasters, said Sen. Booker. The elevation of flood-prone homes is an important part of New Jerseys long-term resiliency efforts and provides families much-needed peace of mind. This federal investment will strengthen New Jersey communities,help mitigate against future disasters, and save lives. The municipalities receiving funding include Avalon Borough, Ocean City, Sea Isle City and Stone Harbor Borough.
