Today, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee, and who fought to establish the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, released the below statement after voting against the confirmation of Kathy Kraninger to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Republicans pushed through her confirmation on a party-line vote. Menendez has criticized Kraninger's nomination for months, including during her nomination hearing in the Senate Banking Committee last July. The American people deserve a Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau who actually has experience protecting consumers, standing up to special interests, and navigating the complexities of mortgages, student loans, credit cards, and other financial products. Not only does Ms. Kraninger have zero experience defending the interests of consumers, she's proven to me she has zero interest in doing so. Her record of failure speaks for itself, overseeing the Trump Administration's despicable policy of separating babies from their mothers at our southern border and coordinating the White House's botched response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, which ultimately left thousands dead. Anyone who managed that catastrophe of a response shouldn't be in charge of standing up for regular Americans against financial institutions.
