Menendez Statement on the Unresolved Presidential Elections in Honduras Thursday, December 21, 2017 Washington US Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, issued the following statement on the worsening situation in Honduras following irregularities and contested results of the November 26th presidential elections. I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the worsening situation in Honduras after a historic and unresolved presidential election. I am particularly troubled by reports of the Honduran police using force against demonstrators and repressing journalists, which has already claimed several lives. Any subversion of democracy through state-sanctioned violence is totally unacceptable and should be forcefully condemned by the international community. I call on Honduran security forces to refrain from using violence and for Honduran officials to remember to uphold all pillars of a democratic society including a free press, the right to peaceful assembly, and transparent political processes. As I said immediately after the November elections, successful democracies require full transparency to earn the trust of their electorate and gain legitimacy. And while Hondurans came out at historic levels to exercise their most fundamental democratic right to choose their President, the elections have been anything but transparent. I applaud the efforts of the Organization of American States (OAS) and European Union electoral observation missions to do due diligence to promote transparency, but the latest OAS report clearly shows that the Honduran elections were riddled with irregularities that irreparably diluted the objectivity and credibility of the democratic process undeserving of the people of Honduras. Moving forward, I call on Jose Orlando Hernandez and Salvador Nasralla to put their differences aside in the name of the Honduran people and work with the OAS to come up with a solution that will restore the Hondurans faith in their democracy and leaders. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
