These fuel economy standards, which first took effect in 2012, were supported by a broad coalition of auto manufacturers as well as labor and environmental organizations. The standards will make cars more fuel efficient over time, while providing auto manufacturers with much needed policy certainty. Today’s announcement re-affirms our commitment to make our auto sector more competitive, nearly double our fuel economy, dramatically cut carbon pollution, and save American drivers billions at the pump.
