Kansas Governor Laura Kelly formally submitted the request for federal support on September 17, 2025. “As Kansas is not unfamiliar to natural disasters, the result of these events resulted in drastic impacts to the communities affected,” the delegation wrote. “Federal support must be provided to assist our state in emergency response and restoration efforts.” “We, the Kansas Delegation, again strongly reiterate our fullest support for the Governor’s request,” continued the delegation. “We look forward to federal assistance made readily available, equipping both state and local governments with the resources needed to address the devastation caused by these severe storms.” Full text of the letter can be found here and below. Dear Mr. President: We write today in support of Governor Laura Kelly’s request for a major disaster declaration for the State of Kansas following the severe thunderstorms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding that occurred from July 17 through July 22, 2025. As Kansas is not unfamiliar to natural disasters, the result of these events resulted in drastic impacts to the communities affected. Federal support must be provided to assist our state in emergency response and restoration efforts. These severe disasters have placed a significant financial strain on residents as they respond to the aftermath of these events. Following a survey of the damage to the impacted counties including Barton, Comanche, Edwards, Ford, Hodgeman, Johnson, Logan, Marion, Morris, Ottawa, Pawnee, Rawlins, Saline, Stevens, Sumner and Wyandotte, it is estimated that Kansas experienced roughly $7.6 million in damages, qualifying the state for over $5.6 million in federal assistance funding. We, the Kansas delegation, again strongly reiterate our fullest support for the Governor’s request.
