GLRI is a results-driven program, and this funding ensures that it has the resources it needsto addressthe most serious issuesthatthreatenthe ecological and economic wellbeing of theGreat Lakesbasin, including invasive species, pollution, and toxic contamination.This $320 million is the largest investment in the Great Lakes' health, ecosystem, and water quality, and has already helped combat harmful algal blooms, invasive species, and pollution in the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are an invaluable resource to Ohio, and GLRI has been a successful public-private partnership that helps protect both our environment and our economy,said Senator Portman.The Great Lakes arecritical to Ohio's fishing industry,provide drinking water for 40 million people, contribute billions in tourism each year, and support hundreds of thousands of jobs across the region. Funding this critical initiative at $320 million this fiscal year is a strong statement of support for the program, and I'm grateful for the backing we've received from the administration and my bipartisan colleagues. I will continue to help lead efforts intheU.S. Senate to support this critical bipartisan initiative. Lake Erie is one of Ohio's most important natural resources and we must do all we can to keep it healthy for families, businesses, boaters, and anglers that rely on the lake,said Senator Brown.We do that by ensuring the GLRI is operating at its full strength so communities can continue the necessary work to keep Lake Erie clean today and for the next generation. Since its inception, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has tripled the successful cleanup and delisting of Areas of Concern throughout the country, reduced phosphorus runoff and the threat of harmful algal blooms, controlled and stopped the advancement of invasive species, and restored wildlife habitats over thousands of miles of rivers and waterways. Since 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has provided nearly $2.5 billion to fund 4,858 projects throughout the Great Lakes region.
