On Chanukah we reflect on religious freedom, on the miracles that took place in ancient times and the rededication of the Temple that followed. Today we can embrace that theme of rededication by rededicating ourselves to our families, our neighbors, our communities, and to the important work we have yet to complete here and abroad on the issues we care about. This is also a holiday when we think about exercising our religious freedom in safety and how that ability has been tragically threatened in recent years. In the last week, I'm proud to say we have made great progress in our efforts to better secure faith-based institutions here in the United States, including at synagogues. Just last week, working with many friends in the Jewish community across Ohio, the Senate passed my legislation formally authorizing the Department of Homeland Security's Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) for the next five years. This important program provides grants to nonprofits and faith-based organizations to help secure their facilities against a potential terrorist attack.This bill is now ready to be signed into law. In addition, the finalFY 2020 funding bill, which the president signed into law last Friday, includes $90 million for these nonprofit security grants a funding level I advocated for and the most ever allocated to this program. The threats to houses of worship and other religious community sites are increasing and we must do everything we can to protect them in Ohio and across our country. It is meaningful to me to be in the lead in the Senate on this issue, but I would love for a time to come when we have defeated hate and anti Semitism and such funding is no longer necessary. Speaking of safety, security, and freedom, this holiday also reminds us of the importance of American leadership in the world. American leadership allows us to protect the values we cherish and to strengthen our alliances with countries who share those values. There is no better example of this than our friends in Israel, with whom we share such deep democratic and emotional bonds.
