The legislation was co-sponsored by twenty-seven senators, including: Senators Portman, Kirk, Menendez, Schumer, Graham, Cardin, McCain, Casey, Rubio, Coons, Cornyn, Blumenthal, Ayotte, Begich, Corker, Pryor, Collins, Landrieu, Moran, Gillibrand, Roberts, Warner, Johanns, Hagan, Cruz, Donnelly, and Blunt. “The current sanctions regime that Congress insisted on is what got the Iranians to the table,” said Portman. “We need to keep the pressure on to force the Iranians to agree to a deal that ensures our security and that of our allies - one that verifiably dismantles their nuclear weapons program.” The prospective sanctions legislation requires further reductions in purchases of Iranian petroleum and applies additional penalties to strategic elements of the Iranian economy, to include the engineering, mining and construction sectors.
