U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) issued the following statement on the conflict in Yemen and his support for a resolution authored by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-TN): I strongly support efforts to halt the fighting in Yemen and that's why I support, and have cosponsored, a resolution authored by Chairman Corker. The Corker resolution expresses our firm belief that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has acted in ways that undermine not only its security, but also our strategic relationship. It states clearly that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is responsible for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and urges the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure appropriate accountability for all those responsible. It also strongly urges the Saudi Coalition to lead the effort in negotiating an immediate ceasefire in Yemen and take concrete steps toward ending this humanitarian crisis. There must be a negotiated end to the fighting in Yemen, and the Saudi government must clearly understand that as a strategic ally of the United States, it has a responsibility to act in ways that promote democracy, human rights, and stability in the region. There is no doubt that the United States-Saudi Arabia relationship is important to United States national security and economic interests, but I believe we must send a message to the administration that we need a stronger response on this issue, one that supports holding the government of Saudi Arabia accountable for its actions and supports an end to the conflict in Yemen.
