S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) released the following statement regarding the international tax reform discussion draft released by Finance Committee Chairman Baucus: “As Ohio businesses and families continue to struggle through this weak economy, we desperately need comprehensive tax reform to enable American companies to expand, hire more workers, and compete effectively in the global economy.  Although I disagree with some of its proposals, I hope the discussion draft will focus attention on our outdated approach to international taxation, and encourage constructive debate over how best to promote American competitiveness. “It is urgent that we fix our broken, complex, and antiquated tax code and replace it with  revenue-neutral, pro-growth tax reform that lessens the burden on job creators and encourages them to grow. Real tax reform means reducing tax rates, including cutting the top federal corporate income tax rate to at least the average of other developed countries, about 25 percent.  It means eliminating complex deductions and credits where Washington tries to pick winners and losers, sapping the strength of American innovation and decision-making in our private sector.  It means simplifying complex international tax rules that serve only to harm the global competitiveness of American businesses and cost American jobs. “Congress must enact tax reform to help American workers, to bring new innovative technologies to market, to infuse our economy with new international capital, and to provide a better future for our children and grandchildren to succeed in the new global economy.” 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
