https://www.portman.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=8A082C0F-72E3-4B84-BF06-65F46F17DEAF On Fox Business, Portman Discusses Jobs, President-Elect Trump's Visit to Ohio 2016-12-08 2016 2016-12 Republican House OH Rob Portman P000449 www.portman.senate.gov     legacy During an interview today on Fox Business, Senator Portman discussed his efforts to strengthen the economy and create more jobs for Ohio workers. Senator Portman expressed his optimism for the country moving forward, saying that, with a new administration, there is “great opportunity for us to reach our potential which will bring back a lot of jobs and also will increase wages to deal with middle class squeeze.” As his record of delivering results for the people of Ohio demonstrates, Portman has consistently worked to cut through gridlock and get things done. That is why he is committed to fighting for a level playing field for Ohio workers, increasing job opportunities and boosting wages, combatting the heroin epidemic, protecting the most vulnerable among us, and much more to get things done for the people he represents. Transcript of the interview can be found below and you can watch the interview here. Anchor: “Condolences to you and everybody at Ohio State University… Will you be in Ohio when Donald Trump visits there today?”Portman: “I sure wish I could be there. We’re here in Washington as you know, still voting. We have votes today and probably through the weekend, but it’s great he is going. He’s going to be talking to first responders including Officer Horujko, he’s the brave officer who showed up within a minute or two, was able to stop this terrorist attack, and he’s also going to meet with some of the families of those injured and some of those who were injured in the attack. So I think it is great he is going, and I wish I could be there with him.” … Anchor: “Senator Portman, I know your thoughts and prayers are on the events at Ohio State and the victims there, but if I can transition you to the legislative calendar for 2017, there is an awful lot in Trump’s to-do list. There is tax reform, there is potential repeal of Obamacare and having to come up with replacement, there is Dodd-Frank and the whole regulatory regime. What do you think the priorities are going to be in new Congress? What are you hoping to get accomplished first, second, and third?”Portman: “I think the top priority is to deal with the Affordable Care Act, and as you know there is discussion about having an immediate vote for repeal and then a longer term process for replace. We do have to ensure that the replace option is something that we focus on because a lot of folks who are in the exchanges who are covered now by Medicaid, through no fault of their own, are involved in the Affordable Care Act that is not working, but we need to be sure that the rug is not pulled out from under them and I think we can do that and do it effectively and come up with a better system. That is I think job number one. But the biggest job, and the second thing is to turn to is jobs, and that will include tax reform, it will include regulatory relief, it will include something on infrastructure to create more jobs opportunity, so I think that is a huge priority of Congress and of the administration, and for the country. There is so much potential. As you know, we’ve got a broken tax code, we’ve talked about it a lot on this show, it’s something that most Americans acknowledge, so I am excited about it, I’m looking forward to working with administration on it.” Anchor: “I mean they’re talking about 3.5 percent to four percent growth. Do you think those plans will get us there?”Portman: “Well, it depends on so many other external factors. You were talking about the ECB this morning and what’s going on in the global economy, but yeah, I think the American economy can once again lead the world. I think we can show that we have the market forces here to be the envy of the world again by unleashing this potential. We are right now shooting ourselves in the foot with a tax code that is noncompetitive, it’s antiquated, a regulatory system that doesn’t take into account the costs and the benefits. There’s just so many things that we can do to close this skills gap. In my home state of Ohio, we’ve got jobs open but we don’t have the skilled workers to fill them, so there is opportunity here, with tax reform and regulatory reform, dealing with health care, energy opportunities, increasing skills training, I mean there is just great opportunity for us to reach our potential which will bring back a lot of jobs and also will increase wages to deal with middle class squeeze. I’m looking forward to it.”  ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
