Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) announced that his Patient Access and Medicare Protection Act has passed the House and Senate and is now headed to the President for signature. Portmans legislation will help to ensure Ohioans have access to healthcare and services. "This commonsense bill will ensure that our nation's most vulnerable will have better access to the quality, affordable healthcare, Portman stated. This bill includes provisions that allow individuals who rely on complex rehabilitative equipment to maintain access to these products, ensures that cancer patients have the option to receive care in their preferred setting, and increases the ability of physicians and hospitals to apply for hardship exemptions from the electronic health record meaningful use requirements." The Patient Access and Medicare Provision Act includes a number of health-related provisions: One-year delay of the application of the proposed Medicare fee schedule adjustment for wheelchair accessories and seat and back cushions when furnished in connection with complex rehab power wheelchairs.
