Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the following joint statement after General Motors (GM) responded to the Senators' letter pressing for answers on the future of the GM Lordstown plant. GM failed to provide clarity on the future of the plant and offered no path forward for its retooling. Both Senators Portman and Brown will keep pushing GM to provide the Lordstown community the answers it deserves and have urged GM to work with them to save these Lordstown jobs. While we asked GM to provide clarity to the Lordstown community, the company chose to sidestep our questions instead. As we head into the holiday season, workers at Lordstown are faced with fear and uncertainty about their futures. They deserve better. We will continue pushing GM to do the right thing, provide answers to its workers, and bring another vehicle to Lordstown to ensure workers keep their jobs, said the Senators. Portman and Brown met with Barra earlier this month following GM's announcement that it would lay off its final shift of workers and close its Lordstown plant in March of 2019. After their meeting, the Senators wrote to GM, pressing the company for answers on the future of the Lordstown plant. A copy of GM's response to the Senators can be found HERE. Earlier this year, GM announced plans to build the new Chevy Blazer in Mexico on the same day the company ended the second shift at a plant.
