https://www.portman.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=F8E3170F-24F4-481E-BF56-2B705969098F Day After Vote, Portman Discusses Historic Tax Cuts on Fox Business 2017-12-21 2017 2017-12 Republican House OH Rob Portman P000449 www.portman.senate.gov     legacy During an interview of Fox Business today, Senator Portman, who served as a conferee on the House-Senate tax reform conference committee, discussed how these historic tax cuts will help the middle class, create jobs, and boost wages for American workers. Portman, who has held six tax reform roundtables in Ohio with local business leaders in recent months, has been vocal on the national stage calling for tax reform, including during recent interviews on CBS This Morning, Fox News, CNN, CNBC, Fox Business, Bloomberg TV, and NBCs Meet The Press twice, as well as recently in op-eds in the Akron Beacon Journal, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Delaware Gazette, and Cincinnati Enquirer. The tax reform effort is widely supported by Ohio small businesses, manufacturers, farmers, and other state and local organizations. Excerpts can be found below and a video can be found here. PORTMAN PRAISES ADMINISTRATION EFFORTS TO PASS TAX REFORM PresidentTrump and his administrationworked really well with us onthis tax reform bill and theydo deserve credit. As you know, Ive worked on taxreform for many yearsincluding trying with theObama administration to dealwith the huge problems in ourtax code on the internationalside and corporate side.We are losing jobs andinvestment every day nowthreetimes as many Americancompanies were bought byforeign companies last year. They indicated interestbecause it's an obviousproblem and yet were neverable to pull the trigger andget to work with us to actually solvethe problem. We now have a more competitivetax code that will helpworkers in my home state of Ohio. They deserve to be commendedfor that. PORTMAN ON HOW TAX REFORM WILL HELP THE MIDDLE-CLASS FAMILIES Even Democrats who areopposed to the bill admit thatmost people are going to get atax cut here.In fact, some of the Democratswho have been most against thebill when they spoke on the floor said that twothirds of people would geta tax cut that is greater than$100.This is middle-class familiesaround Ohio. The Democrats numbers just arentaccurate in terms of theamount of tax relief thats going outand they acknowledge that. What they do say is that theythink the tax cuts in thefirst eight years while realshould be made permanent. We agree with that. We Republicans agree with that. But we haveto live under the constraintsof the Senate budget rulesjust as what happened in 2001and 2003.In both of those cases, as youknow, the tax cuts wereextended for about 95 percent of those taxpayers.I hope that will happenagain. PORTMAN ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CHILDRENS HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM I think youre absolutelyright.Nobody wants a governmentshutdown. It doesnt help the economy orthe taxpayer because when wedo one of these governmentshutdowns we end up comingback and spending moreafter-the-fact.I think there is a commitmentto getting it done.Unfortunately, what were notdoing is dealing with some of theissues we ought to beaddressing. The Childrens HealthInsurance Program, for instance, bipartisan, its already come out of committee.I think we ought to includethat and deal with that issuenow andits a five-year authorization. I think Republicans, having just had agreat victory on this tax reform and tax cutbill, ought to be sure that we also leave towndealing with the spendingissues and do some substantivework in addition on thehealthcare front which we cando. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
