U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) today announced that the Omnibus Appropriations bill before the Senate includes $9.4 million in funding for an upgrade to the indoor firing range facility at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS). This critical funding will help to ensure that our Reservists in Youngstown are equipped with the skills needed to carry out their operations, Portman said. Upgrading the firing range facility will help to maintain the high level of performance at YARS and I am pleased these resources are included in the final legislation. At a time when the United States faces increasing dangers, it is critically important that we provide our military with the resources and training necessary to fulfill a range of national security missions, from degrading and destroying Islamic extremism to deterring Russian aggression against our allies in Europe, to supporting the sovereignty of U.S. allies in the South China Sea. I'm pleased that this legislation provides a higher level of defense spending and I will continue to work with my colleagues both on the Homeland Security Committee and in Congress to protect Americans from these continued threats. Portman has repeatedly worked for funding for the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Youngstown, Ohio. Recently, Portman voted for the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, which included YARS funding. Earlier this year, Portman announced authorization for YARS funding in the the National Defense Authorization Act which was signed into law. Last year, as the Pentagon was developing the proposed Fiscal Year 2016 budget, Portman urged the Air Force to include funding for this firing range upgrade. Portman visited YARS this summer to tour the base and see firsthand the infrastructure needs for training and readiness. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
