Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today introduced a Senate Resolution congratulating the people of Burma on successfully completing free and democratic elections after nearly 50 years of military rule. The resolution also recognizes Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi who led the National League for Democracy to winning sizable majorities in both chambers of Burma's Union Parliament, the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw. In addition, the resolution calls for a peaceful and prompt transition of power in the Government of Burma and encourages all parties to focus on genuine reconciliation in order to make progress towards creating an inclusive and democratic society. It is a pleasure to join forces yet again with Senator McCain in promoting democracy and reconciliation in Burma through this Senate Resolution, said Leader McConnell. The recent election results have rightly raised hopes for the future of Burma. At the same time, it is vitally important that the Burmese government proceed promptly with an orderly transition to implement the will of the people. I'm proud to join Leader McConnell in congratulating the people of Burma on successfully conducting the most free, transparent, and peaceful election in the country's history, said Senator McCain. Our resolution particularly recognizes Aung San Suu Kyi, a champion for human rights and democracy who courageously led her National League for Democracy party to victory.
