U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) today announced that he nominated 43 Kansas students for an appointment to one of the U.S. Service Academies. From the High Plains to the Flint Hills and urban centers, I am constantly humbled by the dedication of young Kansans who aspire to serve in the United States Armed Forces, said Sen. Roberts. As a proud Marine, it has been an honor to nominate hundreds of these extraordinary Kansans over the last forty years for admission to the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Merchant Marine Academies. There is no doubt, the personal resolve and dedication to duty by those who wear the uniform serves as the foundation of our national security. I wish them all the best as they pursue the goal of ensuring America's safety and freedom. Semper Fi. In making the nominations, Senator Roberts followed the recommendations of his Academy Screening Board. The nonpartisan board this year was comprised of Col. Robert Hester, U.S. Army, Col. Fred Reynolds, U.S. Army, retired, and Col. Roger T. Murdock, retired, and was led by Senator Roberts' District Director Gilda Lintz over a four day period. As part of the decision-making process, board members conduct personal interviews with the applicants, as well as review their written applications, G.P.A., and standardized test scores. Once nominated by Senator Roberts, the applicants then must meet the individual admission requirements of each academy. The academies will make the final decisions on who will receive an appointment of admission. Due to the limited number of openings at each academy, not every nominee will receive an appointment.
