Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, introduced a bill Monday to enhance the security of the current Visa Waiver Program. The chairman said this about the bill: A review of U.S. security programs is critical. After the horrific attacks in Paris, I immediately convened a hearing to discuss our vulnerabilities. The committee heard expert testimony about our porous borders, the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program and the weaknesses with the current Visa Waiver Program, particularly since the known attackers in Paris were nationals of countries that are part of the program. It is clear that enhancements to the Visa Waiver Program are needed, and a number of proposals are being considered.I am introducing a bill that incorporates ideas that have emerged at our committee hearings and briefings as well as from the Senate bill I have cosponsored and the House bill that will be voted on this week. We will explore this legislation on Wednesday in our committee. I encourage my colleagues to support this package and will keep working to ensure these reforms are signed into law.
