Sanders is once again organizing a State of the Union essay contest for Vermont high school students. Participants are asked to write a 250- to 500-word essay that describes “their own view of the state of the union. The finalists’ pieces will be entered in the Congressional Record and the authors will meet with Sanders for a conversation, the Burlington Free Press reported. LINK National Two NYC Police Murdered A gunman shot and killed two New York City police officers before taking his own life in a brazen ambush that played out on a quiet Brooklyn street corner Saturday afternoon, New York police said. Plice are investigating social-media postings in which the gunman foreshadowed the killings and referenced Eric Garner and Michael Brown, two unarmed black men who recently died during encounters with white police officers, The Washington Post reported. LINK FairPoint Strike Two hundred FairPoint Communications workers rallied on Friday in Concord, New Hampshire, and promised to continue a 10-week-old strike that has begun to take a personal and financial toll on the workers and their families. Gov. Maggie Hassan met with FairPoint officials on Tuesday at the Statehouse and urged them to work in good faith with their employees, her spokesman said. The company’s 1,700 workers across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont began striking in October. LINK Vermont Progressives Slam Shumlin’s ‘Broken Promises’ The Vermont Progressive Party issued a statement criticizing Gov. Peter Shumlin's decision not to move forward with a single-payer health care system. "While we are outraged by Shumlin's broken promises, we are not terribly surprised, rather than work through these issues or scale back the project, Shumlin decided to scrap it entirely." The Progressives also note they've sat out the governor's race in the last three elections in large part because of his promise to lead on single-payer, WCAX-TV reported.
