Joseph Krawczyk Jr., chairman of the home’s board of trustees, said it was “great” to hear from Sen. Sanders that the project was now on the VA’s priority list. “Sen. Sanders has always been a great supporter, not just of the veterans home, but of veterans overall throughout the country and we’re really happy he comes from Vermont,” Krawczyk told the Rutland Herald. LINK National Thousands Expected at NYPD Funeral Thousands of police officers will gather in Queens, New York today for the funeral of New York City Police Officer Rafael Ramos. He was ambushed along with his partner one week ago. Today he will be laid to rest, with the nation's Vice President attending, CBS News reported. LINK Trade Deal President Obama is preparing a major push on a vast free-trade zone that seeks to enlist Republicans as partners and test his premise that Washington can still find common ground on major initiatives. It also will test his willingness to buck his own party in pursuit of a legacy-burnishing achievement. Already, fellow Democrats are accusing him of abandoning past promises on trade and potentially undermining his domestic priority of reducing income inequality, according to The Washington Post. LINK Jobs and Crime A couple of years ago, the city of Chicago started a summer jobs program for teenagers attending high schools in some of the city's high-crime, low-income neighborhoods. The program was meant to connect students to work, but officials also hoped that it might curb the kinds of problems like higher crime that arise when there's no work to be found. Research on the program conducted by the University of Chicago Crime Lab suggests that these summer jobs have actually had such an effect, The Washington Post reported. LINK Vermont Fuel Prices The Vermont Fuel Dealers Association says it's been getting questions from people who regret they got into a contract for fuel last summer at prices higher than they are now. But the group says a contract is a contract, and that dealers also are locked into contracts, with wholesale prices negotiated last summer, before the recent oil price decline. The state Department of Public Service reports that Vermont's average spot price for oil has dropped from nearly $3.75 per gallon in May to about $3.22 a gallon now, AP reported.
