Bernie Sanders took to the Senate floor on this day four years ago and didn’t stop speaking for 8 ½ hours. Some called it a filibuster. Keith Olberman dubbed it the Filibernie. The speech made the case against a tax deal that had been reached by President Barack Obama with the Republican leadership in Congress to extend Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. “It makes no sense to me to provide huge tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires while we drive up the national debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay,” Sanders said of the deal at the time. Over Sanders’ objection, the tax deal was approved for two more years. Since then, however, Sanders’ view has prevailed and Congress let tax breaks for the top 1 percent of wage earners expire.
