Ben Sasses first speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate. It can be found on his website (www.sasse.senate.gov) and in other places on the Internet. Wed be flabbergasted if almost everyone -- even those who did not vote for him and could never imagine themselves voting for him -- did not find themselves nodding in agreement at some point. Heres the money graph, as old editors would say, in a mother lode of contenders for the label. And if I can be brutally honest for a moment: Im home basically every weekend, and what I hear -- and what Im sure most of you hear -- is some version of this: A pox on both parties and all your houses. To the grandstanders who use this institution as a platform for outside pursuits: Few believe the countrys needs are as important to you as your ambitions. To the Democrats, who did this body harm through nuclear tactics: Few believe bare-knuckled politics are a substitute for principled governing. And does anyone doubt that many on both the right and the left now salivate for more of these radical tactics? The people despise us all. If Sasses speech can be faulted, it would be that its better at defining the problem than in prescribing solutions. But as the 12-step programs say, the first step is admitting you have a problem. And it seems safe to say, the better the analysis of the problem, the closer one is to fixing it.
