Schatz touted the progress made since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act last year, including the creation of hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs and lower energy prices for Hawai‘i families. Schatz was part of a Senate delegation which was led by U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and also included U.S. Senators Tom Carper (D-Del.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), and Ed Markey (D-Mass). “Our message to the world at COP28 was simple: America took the biggest climate action in human history, and it’s working,” said Senator Schatz. “The Inflation Reduction Act is proof that climate action is good for the economy and good for the planet. We proved the doubters wrong and sincerely hope that governments across the world will follow suit.” The Senators were briefed by U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry as well as State Department officials, and met with foreign delegations including from Ukraine, Japan, South Korea, and the Pacific Islands Forum, among others. They also participated in various events highlighting the United States’ work on tackling the climate crisis; how other nations can replicate the success of the IRA to spur economic and climate progress of their own; and solutions to various global challenges related to climate, including deforestation.
