The measure will extend additional federal discretionary funds to disaster response efforts without assigning budgetary offsets. Strange cosponsored an amendment, introduced by Senator Shelby, that would have allowed the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to continue paying claims while removing the provision in the Disaster Relief Supplemental that wipes out the unsustainable $16 billion in debt accrued by the NFIP, leaving taxpayers on the hook. “The state of Alabama knows better than most the devastating consequences of natural disasters in the Gulf, and I am committed to helping our neighbors rebuild after Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria,” said Strange. “However, spending beyond our means will further limit our ability to promise effective aid to victims of future disasters, especially when it comes to flood insurance.
