Tester's resolution designates the day after Thanksgiving as "Native American Heritage Day" and the month of November as "National Native American Heritage Month" to recognize the powerful contributions that Native Americans have made to the nation. "This resolution helps educate folks across Montana and around the country about our nation's history and promotes a better understanding of its first people," said Tester. "From honoring tribal sovereignty to promoting self-governance and determination, this resolution serves as a reminder of our treaty and trust responsibilities to Indian Country." The resolution is cosponsored by seven bipartisan members of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. "Native Americans maintain vibrant cultures and traditions and hold a deeply rooted sense of communities," the resolution reads. "Native Americans have moving stories of tragedy, triumph, and perseverance that need to be shared with future generations... Be it resolved, that the Senate recognizes the month of November 2017 as National Native American Heritage Month."
