Wicker, along with Senators Ted Budd, R-N.C., and James Lankford, R-Okla., led a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging the State Department to address the mistreatment of Christians by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Specifically, the letter urged the administration to impose sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights and Accountability Act on PRC officials responsible for religious freedom violations in China. Senator Wicker joined former Senator Ben Cardin, D-Md., in authoring the Global Magnitsky Human Rights and Accountability Act. Enacted into law in 2016, it grants the U.S. government the ability to sanction individuals for human rights abuse. Additionally, Wicker joined Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas., in a resolution condemning the PRC’s persecution of religious minority groups, including Christians. “The United States has led the world in religious freedom, standing against tyrannical regimes like the People’s Republic of China. We must speak the truth about the regime’s evil crackdown on Christians and other religious groups. We will not stop advocating for those living under the thumb of Xi Jinping’s oppression,” said Senator Wicker.
