Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) issued the following statement on the House's enactment of the Violence Against Women Act. Today's vote for a comprehensive Violence Against Women Act is a major victory and an encouraging sign of bipartisanship on an issue vital to millions of Americans, Yarmuth said. All victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Louisville and across our nation can now share in the certainty that they will be able to seek the support they need and the justice they deserve. On February 12, the Senate approved S. 47 strong, comprehensive legislation to reauthorize VAWA by a bipartisan vote of 78 to 22. The bill significantly strengthens the ability of the federal government, states, law enforcement, and service providers to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. It also provides new protections for tribal members, immigrants, and members of the LGBT community. In an unexpected reversal, House Republican Leadership brought S. 47 to the Floor for a vote on today. Eighty-seven Republicans joined 199 House Democrats in voting to approve the legislation 286 to 138.
