A gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. In the year since a gunman murdered 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School, more than 190 children in the United States have lost their lives to guns. Families in our community and across the country have suffered unimaginable grief and loss as a result of gun violence. Rightly, millions of Americans have demanded that something be done to reverse the dramatic increases in gun violence in our schools, public spaces, and homes. But by and large, the response of our elected officials particularly Congress has been a failure. While most states have enacted new laws pertaining to guns during the past year, nearly two-thirds of them loosen measures designed to increase gun safety. Instead of responding to gun violence with rational, commonsense measures that address its numerous causes, far too many of our leaders have responded out of fear of an influential gun lobby and the vast networks of misinformation it promotes. Reducing gun violence requires a commitment to understanding and compassion, as well as the will to act.
