She made the following comment regarding her vote: “Although I know how important it is for us to pass a budget, I could not support the ‘Cromnibus’ bill that was brought before the House last night. It contained too many harmful provisions that could negatively impact the folks in my district. Instead of making hard choices to continue to fund the government, Republicans have used this bill as an opportunity to weaken a key provision in the Dodd Frank legislation that protects tax payers. By undermining this provision, we are creating the same climate that almost caused the collapse of our entire financial system and caused hundreds of thousands of people to lose their homes. Just yesterday, The Winston-Salem Journal reported a spike in foreclosures in Forsyth County. This can be attributed to the loose regulations that Dodd Frank was designed to prevent. The people in my congressional district are still recovering and we can’t afford to go backward. There is also a provision in this bill that would allow wealthy individuals to contribute more to political campaigns. Allowing wealthy individuals to contribute more only gives more power to special interests. Our political system should be open to all people, not just those who have money. None of these things have anything to do with funding our government and they should not be in the bill. I have made it my life’s work to fight for working families.
