http://alceehastings.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=359828 Hastings Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2013-10-30 2013 2013-10 Democrat House FL Alcee Hastings H000324 alceehastings.house.gov     legacy Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement recognizing the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month: “As a co-sponsor of the original Violence Against Women Act of 1993 (VAWA), I am proud of the progress our country has made in reducing domestic violence over the past two decades. We have taken great strides in banishing domestic violence from our homes, and have dedicated significant resources to better protect survivors, prosecute abusers, and prevent new violence before it occurs. According the Department of Justice (DOJ), our nation has seen a 64 percent decline in domestic violence since 1994.  “Despite this overwhelming progress, one in four women will still experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Young adults between the ages of 16-24 still experience domestic violence at the highest rates, and, every day, three women lose their lives as a result of domestic violence. These statistics are both staggering and unacceptable. Clearly, we must do more. That is why I proudly supported the re-authorization of VAWA.  “Even though Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed only once a year, efforts to bring an end to domestic violence must continue each and every single day. I believe that we must do all that we can to aid those who have suffered from domestic violence, and work to prevent new violence from happening.” Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
