| http://alceehastings.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=360542 | Hastings’ Statement on Senate Passage of ENDA | 2013-11-07 | 2013 | 2013-11 | Democrat | House | FL | Alcee Hastings | H000324 | alceehastings.house.gov | legacy | Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after the Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2013 (ENDA) by a vote of 64-32: “In passing ENDA today, the Senate sent a clear message that employer discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity should be outlawed. All across the country, qualified, hardworking Americans continue to be denied job opportunities, harassed, fired, or otherwise discriminated against solely because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). ENDA is a bi-partisan measure that strengthens basic employment protections for all Americans and, in my opinion, is long overdue. “It is now up to the House to ensure that this critical legislation becomes law, however, Speaker John Boehner has indicated that he will not allow ENDA to be brought to the Floor for a vote. This decision is outright unconscionable, and threatens the livelihood of LGBT individuals and their families. Sadly, it appears that House Republican Leadership will once again stand on the wrong side of history and attempt to block ENDA from taking effect. Speaker Boehner should reconsider his position and allow the House to vote on passage of a fully inclusive ENDA as soon as possible.” Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
