http://alceehastings.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=362880 Hastings Marks International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women 2013-11-25 2013 2013-11 Democrat House FL Alcee Hastings H000324 alceehastings.house.gov     legacy Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement recognizing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: “Today, nations all around the world are observing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Violence against women remains a global pandemic, and seven out of every ten women worldwide will experience violence or abuse in their lifetime. “Up to two million people, 80 percent of whom are women, are trafficked annually and forced into prostitution or domestic servitude. Furthermore, nearly 50 percent of sexual assaults across the globe are committed against girls under the age of 16, and more than 130 million girls and women have undergone female genital mutilation, predominately in countries throughout Africa and the Middle East. “Thankfully, in the United States, the number of cases of domestic violence has declined in recent years. Despite these reductions, however, domestic violence remains the most prevalent and underreported form of abuse against women, and there are still millions of cases each and every year. Approximately one in four women in the United States will experience domestic violence during their lifetime. Many women living in low-income households and individuals in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) relationships experience violence and abuse at even higher rates. “It is essential that we continue to address these staggering figures as quickly and comprehensively as possible. As a Member of Congress, I will continue to advocate for the thousands of victims of domestic abuse throughout our country, and will work tirelessly to support and implement policies that will further reduce abuse here at home and abroad. As we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, let us reflect on the progress we have made, and rededicate ourselves to bringing an end to the mistreatment of women and girls.” Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
