Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement on House of Representatives reauthorizing the charter of the Export-Import Bank: Last night, the House voted to re-open the Export-Import Bank. The Bank is an invaluable tool for American exporters and the Senate should pass this legislation right away. Reauthorization of the Bank has been drawn out for months. While I am pleased that the House voted overwhelmingly and in a bipartisan manner to pass this legislation, it is shameful that such extreme partisanship on the part of House Republican leadership necessitated the use of a discharge petition. The Export-Import Bank operates at zero cost to the American taxpayer and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs, yet Republicans refused to bring it to the floor for a vote. The charter of the Bank should have never been allowed to lapse in the first place. This manufactured-crisis is a perfect example of the partisanship that has gripped Washington for far too long. Allowing the Bank's charter to lapse only hurt American workers and put American businesses competing in foreign markets at a disadvantage. We need more jobs in our country, not less. I hope that this legislation reaches the Presidents desk quickly so that we can put this charade behind us. Congressman Alcee L.
