Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement after Congressman Paul Ryan was sworn in as the new Speaker of House of Representatives: I join with my colleagues in saluting Speaker John Boehner as he steps down from the House of Representatives. Speaker Boehner is a true statesman who always put the institution of Congress first. Despite our differences, his graciousness was always apparent, and this institution was better because of it. As Speaker Ryan takes the gavel, there are many issues that need to be addressed in America. Critically important and time-sensitive challenges face this body, and the new Speaker will need to bring Congress together to meet the needs of our country. I have no doubt that Speaker Ryan is capable of doing so, and though we may at times have different visions for America, I look forward to working with him to make real progress in addressing our nations infrastructure needs, creating jobs, improving wages, and reforming our immigration system. I was pleased to hear Speaker Ryans call to return to regular order. For too long, the House of Representatives has skirted the rules, bypassing the legislative process in order to bring legislation to the floor quickly and without adequate time for review. I hope that Speaker Ryan follows through with this promise, and that the dysfunction gripping the House of Representatives comes to an end. I offer Speaker Ryan and his family my heartfelt congratulations as he takes on his new role, and look forward to real progress in the days ahead. Congressman Alcee L.
