Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement in commemoration of the 27th Annual World AIDS Day: Each December 1st we mark World AIDS Day, a day on which we reflect on the tremendous progress we have made in our collective response to HIV/AIDS.Today, let usrecommit ourselves to the fight to rid the world of this disease once and for all. This years World AIDS Day theme is The Time to Act is NOW, which underscores our resolve to put a stop to new HIV infections, discrimination, and AIDS-related deaths. Approximately 35 million people are living with HIV globally, 19 million of which are unaware that they are infected. Although the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund have been instrumental in dramatically reducing its occurrence in developing countries new HIV infections worldwide are down 35 percent since 2000, and AIDS-related deaths have been reduced by 42 percent since their peak in 2004 much work still remains. On this World AIDS Day, let us rededicate ourselves to ending the global HIV/AIDS epidemic and tackling the challenges we still face in understanding, treating, and preventing the disease so that we may make a future free of HIV/AIDS a reality.
