Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement recognizing National Bullying Awareness month, which takes places every year during the month of October: “During National Bullying Awareness Month, we highlight the need to raise awareness of bullying prevention. Bullying is defined as any behavior that hurts, harms, or humiliates a student, either physically or emotionally. It can happen while at school, online, or in communities away from school grounds. Bullying behavior is often repeated by individuals or groups that have more social or physical ‘power’ with the intent of harassing others. “Today, bullying and abuse has become a serious concern. This form of intimidation significantly affects our nation’s youth and their families. Roughly 32 percent of 12-18-year-olds say they have been bullied, and suicide has risen to become the second-largest cause of death in teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 24. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) students who experience bullying are at increased risk for poor academic performance, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, and depression. “While we have taken steps to improve school safety and inclusiveness, we need to continue building on efforts to end bullying. I remain committed to working with our country’s youth, parents, educators, and communities to protect the safety of our children and ensure a welcoming environment at schools across the country.” Congressman Alcee L.
