Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement recognizing National Domestic Violence Awareness Month: “During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we highlight the painful reality of intimate partner abuse in our country. Domestic violence takes many forms: it can include emotional abuse as well as physical, psychological, and sexual violence, with the intention of intimidating, abusing, or otherwise exerting control of one intimate partner over another. “Nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute in the United States. On a typical day, more than 20,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. While rates of domestic violence have dropped significantly over the past two decades, far too many women and men struggle to free themselves from abusive situations. “As we observe this month, we work to let victims know that they are not alone. I was proud to support the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in 2013, which expanded protections and services for Native Americans, immigrants, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. All people deserve to feel safe and secure, and I will continue to work in Congress to protect victims of domestic violence.” Congressman Alcee L.
