Join my email updates now so you don't miss any in the future! It's been a busy few weeks, so here's a quick update on how I'm working for you. Tuition Hike As you may know, the University of California regents recently voted to raise tuition for U.C. students. If their plan goes forward, students could see a 28 percent tuition increase over 5 years. I'm extremely disappointed by this vote. It breaks the promise of an affordable education for many students. As a co-chair of the bipartisan California Public Higher Education Caucus, I helped lead the opposition to this tuition hike. Several of my California congressional colleagues joined me to urge the U.C. regents to stop the hike so students aren't priced out of the American dream. Several state lawmakers have since proposed plans to avoid the hikes, but none have yet been adopted. We need to bring down the skyrocketing cost of education so that same dream is available to this and future generations. >> Please click here to read our letter urging a rejection of tuition hikes. Fairness for Pregnant Working Women Earlier this month, the Supreme Court heard arguments on a major pregnancy discrimination case. This case may decide if women can expect reasonable accommodations at the workplace so they can keep providing for their families while they're pregnant. As a husband and a father of a daughter, I believe a woman shouldn't have to choose between her job and the health of her pregnancy. That's why I joined with dozens of my congressional colleagues to send a legal brief to the Supreme Court. We're urging the Court to rule in favor of pregnant working women. I’m also supporting the Pregnant Women’s Fairness Act in Congress to end unfair discrimination. >> Please click here to see more about how I'm fighting for women and families in Congress. Voting for Tax Relief for Families and Businesses Earlier this month, I voted for the bipartisan Tax Increase Prevention Act so families & businesses can rely on tax relief next year. This will help grow our economy by supporting research and development, clean energy, homeowners, and more. I'm pleased to report to you that the Senate also passed this bill this week. The President will soon sign this bill and make it the law of the land. During a visit to one of our local small businesses, Brothers Boats in Folsom. I discussed how my bipartisan bill, the Small Business and Family Relief Act, would help roll back a new health insurance tax that makes it harder for small businesses to grow. While this is an important step, the hard work of reforming our tax code and providing certainty to our economy isn't over. I will keep working with Republicans and Democrats so we can pass a more permanent solution that works for our economy and middle class families. >> Please click here to read more about this legislation. Reuniting with one of our local heroes As a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I had the honor of making an official congressional visit to Afghanistan in 2013. This trip was an important opportunity to meet with U.S. & Afghan officials, to review our mission, and to check on the wellbeing of our brave troops. During my visit, I had the honor of meeting Morgan Alcalay from Carmichael. It was great to see him again safe and sound on U.S. soil at my Washington office earlier this month. It was a privilege to welcome Morgan home and to thank him for his service to our country. Our service members and veterans deserve nothing less than our unwavering support. That's why my office is here to help local service members and veterans who are having trouble with the federal government.
