Thomas Jefferson once said that ‘the ground of liberty is to be gained by inches.’ This bipartisan budget agreement, which passed the House today, represents a modest, but important, step forward in a Congress mired in gridlock and partisanship. This two year budget agreement would avoid another government shutdown in January, provide certainty to businesses and families, and put the budget process back on solid ground. “This agreement protects our national security and defense capabilities around the world – capabilities that have diminished due to the President’s sweeping and indiscriminate sequester cuts. The deal begins targeting the main driver of our national debt: mandatory spending. In total, this agreement reduces the deficit by $23 billion and spends less than previous GOP budgets. And, it accomplishes these important steps forward without increasing taxes on hardworking Americans. “Though this is a small step forward, there is still much work to be done. Those in Eastern and Southeastern Ohio have to balance their household budget; the federal government should be no different.
