Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the mass shooting inSan Bernardino, California: My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the survivors of yesterdays horrific mass shooting in California. While information about the shooters and their motive is still not entirely clear, Congress has a moral obligation to do something to address our nations gun violence epidemic. These tragedies have become far too common in our country and Congress must review every available proposal to determine what steps can be taken to reduce future incidences of gun violence. Obviously one single approach to ending gun violence will not be effective. What is needed is a comprehensive, evidence-based set of policy proposals that will help keep our communities safe from gun violence. The House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, of which I serve as a vice chair, has put forward several proposals that would go a long way in achieving these goals. These proposals include reinstating and strengthening the assault weapons ban, reducing the size of magazines, implementing universal background checks, cracking down on illegal-gun trafficking and straw-purchasing, improving our mental-health system, and implementing comprehensive, community based violence prevention and intervention programs.
