Cartwright Announces $198,330 Grant Awarded to Catholic Social Services to Curb Youth Homelessness | 2016-09-29 | 2016 | 2016-09 | Democrat | House | PA | Matt Cartwright | C001090 | cartwright.house.gov | legacy | Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a Health Services grant in the amount of $198,330 to Catholic Social Services of Wilkes-Barre through the Administration for Children and Families’ Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB). “Catholic Social Services makes a big difference in the lives of young people throughout northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Rep. Cartwright, member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. “These funds will help them continue the important work they are doing on behalf of vulnerable, at-risk youth throughout our region.” Catholic Social Services will use the funds to help administer the FYSB’s Basic Center Program. The program works to strengthen community-based programs that meet the immediate needs of runaway and homeless youth and their families. The programs provide youth up to age 18 with emergency shelter, food, clothing, counseling and referrals for health care. Most basic centers can provide 21 days of shelter for up to 20 youth. There are exceptions for jurisdictions that have different standards for licensing. Basic centers seek to reunite young people with their families, whenever possible, or to locate appropriate alternative placements. Basic Centers provided emergency shelter for more than 30,000 youth on the streets in FY 2014. Rep. Matt Cartwright represents Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District, which includes Schuylkill County and portions of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, and Northampton Counties. Cartwright serves on the House Committee on Appropriations. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
