http://cartwright.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/rep-cartwright-announces-420226-in-nasa-funds-for-nurture-nature-center Rep. Cartwright Announces $ 420,226 in NASA Funds for Nurture Nature Center in Easton 2016-09-30 2016 2016-09 Democrat House PA Matt Cartwright C001090 cartwright.house.gov     legacy Easton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that a grant in the amount of $420,226 has been awarded to the Nurture Nature Center in Easton through NASA’s Competitive Program for Science Museums, Planetariums, and NASA Visitor Centers Plus Other Opportunities (CP4SMPVC+). The goal of the CP4SMPVC+ Program is to get more kids interested in education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). “This grant will help the Center get more kids interested in STEM fields,” said Rep. Cartwright.  “Hopefully, some of those kids will grow up to pursue careers in these fields, which will provide our nation’s businesses with the workforce it needs to compete in today’s global economy.” The Center’s project, called “6 Degrees of Influence: Understanding the Interconnectedness of Earth Systems” supports NASA’s education mission to advance high quality STEM education through the development of programming for middle school students, teachers, and minority undergraduates. The project focuses on earth science concepts and the theme of interconnectedness, relying on a ‘6 Degrees of Influence’ (similar to the 6 degrees of separation) to capture interest.  The project will include the development of a Science on a Sphere® program and associated arts-based communication workshop to help participants visualize and physically diagram their connections to global issues.  Additionally, there will be an undergraduate internship program that engages historically underrepresented youth, as well as teacher education workshops.  The two-year project will kick off in February 2017. Nurture Nature Center is a dynamic center for community learning about local environmental risks. NASA’s CP4SMPVC+ Program aims to encourage STEM education and careers by working collaboratively with other agencies to engage students, teachers, and faculty in NASA’s missions and unique assets.  Awards are announced every two years, pending availability of funds. Rep. Matt Cartwright represents Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District, which includes Schuylkill County and portions of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, and Northampton Counties.  Cartwright serves on the House Committee on Appropriations. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
