Cicilline (D-RI), a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement today: Current federal law already requires refugees to be thoroughly screened by the FBI, State Department, Department of Homeland Security, Defense Department, and the National Counterterrorism Center. The screening process includes multiple high-level security checks, biometric screening, and a mandatory interview with Homeland Security before anyone is granted access to our country. In addition, existing federal law already prohibits admission of any person that poses a danger to the United States. H.R. 4038 adds no additional safety provisions nor new methods to enhance security, but only another layer of bureaucracy to the existing program. The current system works. In fact, of the 2,174 Syrian refugees admitted to our country since September 11, 2001, not a single one has been charged with a terrorism-related offense.
