In that spirit, I thank my constituents for their friendship, hard work, and commitment to the 7th District. As we celebrate, we also remember our dedicated service members and veterans whose sacrifice allows us to enjoy the holiday season. Sincerely, Congressman Collin C. Peterson Minnesota 7th District Minnesota Farmers Union Doug Peterson (President, Minnesota Farmers Union) The Minnesota Farmers Union held its 74th Annual Meeting over the weekend in Minneapolis. I had a good discussion with delegates about a variety of issues, including voluntary Country of Origin Labelling, the Trans- PacificPartnership, Waters of the U.S., and wolf delisting. I have always appreciated working with the Farmers Union on agriculture policy, and am proud to be a multiple recipient of the organizations Golden Triangle Award, given to members of Congress for support of family farmers and ranchers. Minnesota Farm Bureau State 4-H Ambassadors Laura Wyatt (Anoka County), Jake Brekke (Scott County), Anna Brekke (Scott County), Lucia Davila Alvarez (Ramsey County), and Martin Novacek (Roseau County) The Minnesota Farm Bureau held its annual meeting last weekend in Bloomington. I work closely with the Minnesota Farm Bureau in shaping farm policy, so I was grateful for the opportunity to speak at the organizations award luncheon on Saturday.We had a good discussionon issues such as Waters of the U.S., the Renewable Fuel Standard, crop insurance, and GMO labelling. Emerging Leaders Program Luke Stuewe (Minnesota Department of Agriculture) Luke Stuewe, a soil scientist and hydrologist with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), was recently selected to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program. Over the next five months, Luke will interview leaders to build a deeper understanding of effective leadership. It was an honor to meet with him and provide my input and perspective, and I wish Luke the best as he completes the program and moves into leadership roles within his own career. Newsstand Thanksgiving Food Safety The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) releasedsafety suggestionsto help families properly and safely prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday. Included in the guidelines are steps to follow when selecting, thawing, and cooking a turkey, as well as consuming leftovers. Food safety precautions have proven to help keep families healthy over the holidays by protecting against foodborne illness. National Organic Farming Handbook The Department of Agricultures Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) released a handbook this week to help its conservation planners and agriculture professionals work with current and prospective organic producers. Ten member organizations from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition collaborated with NRCS to develop the handbook as part of a multi-year Conservation Innovation Grant project.
