Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley) responded to the announcement that U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel will step down. Hagel has served as Secretary of Defense for nearly two years. Cook said, “I disagreed with Secretary Hagel often on policy matters, but he served his country in combat and in office and did so with distinction and honor. He also inherited a number of existing problems and, in my opinion, terrible policy coming directly from the White House. “We’ve now had two Secretaries of Defense in a row who have had serious disagreements with the President. I hope we can get back on track during one of the more difficult times in our nation’s history.” A member of the House Veterans’ Affairs, Armed Services, and Foreign Affairs Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps.
